The North Pacolet Account

What happened to the Hannon family? A history published in 1897 says members of the family were killed in an attack near the North Pacolet River in 1776. Three children survived: Edwin, Winnie and infant William. That is the oldest detailed account we found. It is a family and community recollection recorded more than a century after the event, not an eyewitness report.

What the earliest detailed account says

In J. B. O. Landrum’s Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina (1897), pp. 94–96 of the printed book, the family lived beside the North Pacolet, in what is now Polk County, North Carolina. Landrum says the father and older children were planting corn a short distance from the house when attackers arrived. Edwin, about ten, escaped across the river. He tried to take his younger brother John with him, but John was killed. Winnie, described as seven or eight, hid with her infant brother William in a canebrake.

Landrum explicitly calls the episode a “traditional account” and says its full extent cannot be known. He names N. H. Hill, Sallie Henderson and Candace Daniel as people from whom he obtained particulars. Those names offer a useful trail for further research, but the book does not provide a contemporary 1776 deposition or a list of every person present.

What became of the surviving children?

The same account says Edwin, Winnie and William were taken in by Colonel John Earle. Edwin and William later married Earle’s daughters. Landrum also identifies William as a pastor of Wolf Creek Baptist Church, organized in 1803. These later biographical details make the story traceable beyond the attack, though they still need to be checked against church, land and family records. A catalog record for a Hannon family history identifies another potential source; a catalog listing alone does not verify its contents.

What later retellings add

An earlier version of this article named a baby sister, Elizabeth, and described crows, a forbidden river crossing and a hollow log. We have removed those scenes because they do not appear in Landrum’s account. In his version, the infant who survives with Winnie is William, and the hiding place is a canebrake. Where a later family account differs, it should be identified and cited on its own terms.

Landrum refers to the attackers as “Indians.” Some later retellings identify them specifically as Cherokee. The 1897 passage does not establish the attackers’ individual identities or affiliation. The wider 1776 frontier conflict deserves careful treatment, including the displacement and violence faced by Cherokee communities, but that context cannot by itself identify the people involved in this attack.

What would move the record forward?

A contemporary militia report, land or probate record, church register, or documented family manuscript could test parts of the story that Landrum inherited. Until then, the responsible answer is narrower than the dramatic retellings: the 1897 history records a 1776 tragedy on the North Pacolet and names three children who survived, while several vivid details remain unverified.

For the source trail and a fuller comparison of later versions, read our Hannon family investigation.

The 1897 North Pacolet account names Edwin, Winnie and William as survivors of the 1776 Hannon family attack.
