It may describe an older sighting, advertise an event or offer an explanation for a strange photograph. In the sources checked for this report, we found a dated West Virginia account whose writer concluded that the apparent figure was a tree stump. We did not establish a verified 2026 encounter with an unknown winged creature.

This review was checked on September 27, 2026. It covers accessible web reports and the sources linked below. It is not a census of private witness submissions or every social media post. A missing report cannot show that nobody saw something unusual.

The 2026 report ledger

Item

Event date

Publication date

Location and source

Evidence and outcome

Apparent figure on a wooded trail

Exact day not stated separately

May 15, 2026

Olde Oak RV Park, West Columbia, West Virginia; the park’s own blog

The post includes images. Its writer describes a motionless shape, identifies it as a tree stump and says they had not returned to check it. No independent examination is supplied.

Mothman Festival

September 19 and 20, 2026, advertised dates

Official event page checked September 27

Point Pleasant, West Virginia

An advertised cultural event. It supplies no evidence of a new creature encounter.

The Olde Oak account is useful because readers can inspect its explanation. Its question-mark headline should travel with the writer’s conclusion. Reposting the image as a sighting while leaving out that conclusion would change the account.

The festival’s official website gives the 2026 dates. A crowd gathering to celebrate a legend and a witness reporting an unfamiliar animal are different kinds of evidence. Both may appear in a search for Mothman this year.

November 15 or November 16, 1966?

Two dates recur in summaries of the Point Pleasant story. West Virginia’s tourism department dates the couples’ reported encounter to November 15, 1966. The local newspaper report appeared the following day. The state’s account distinguishes the encounter from publication.

The West Virginia Archives and History clipping list records the November 16 issue of the Point Pleasant Register. It also lists contemporary reports and competing explanations published later that month. This archive gives a reader a route back to the early reporting, before later books and films reshaped the story.

The clipping index establishes that the articles exist. It does not establish the identity of the creature described by witnesses. Researchers should inspect the actual clipping before relying on a quotation or an extra detail from a modern retelling.

What caused the Silver Bridge collapse?

The bridge collapsed on December 15, 1967. The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation identifies the initiating failure as a fracture in eyebar 330 at joint C13N in the north suspension chain. Its full report documents the engineering investigation.

That finding should accompany any mention of the Mothman omen story. A claimed warning needs its own evidence: a dated record made before the collapse, a specific prediction and a clear account of who received it. A later recollection that something felt ominous cannot by itself establish a prediction.

How we assess a new sighting

A useful witness report records the event date separately from the upload date. It gives a location precise enough to assess the surroundings without publishing a private address. The observer should describe what they saw before adopting a name for it.

For photographs or video, the original file is more useful than a cropped repost. A wider view may reveal a branch, a perched bird or an object much closer to the camera than it first appears. A second observer matters most when their account was recorded independently, before they read the first report.

Our ledger separates the witness’s interpretation from any later explanation. An unresolved report remains unresolved. It does not become evidence of Mothman’s identity simply because an ordinary explanation has not yet been established.

Where the record stands

The current review contains one directly accessible 2026 apparent-sighting account with the writer’s own ordinary explanation. It also records the official festival dates as cultural activity. We have not treated undated summaries, older Chicago accounts or promotional illustrations as new 2026 sightings.

For the broader Point Pleasant story, see our Mothman historical overview.
